Indians : Indian postal services - what are views? pls read details below.?

With the electronic growth today, considering Emails, Mobile SMS, internet, their service is sidelined.

Still the postman roam around a vast area to deliver the letters with a Bicycle? is it not a pity?

Considering the courier persons, are our post man given enough salary / allowances? Atleast are they given REACHABLE area where they can deliver and collect letters using their Bicycles? Are they given pertol allowance if they prefer using Two wheelers to deliver the posts? The posts are delivered only once a week even in bigger towns in several areas! are there any solutions to these problems? your views, suggestions and solutions pls..Indians : Indian postal services - what are views? pls read details below.?
Friend,

I appreciate your observation and concern.

Really it is a fact that you focused.

the Post Man is roaming on Bicycle a large area with all the bundles in hot sun.

His salary is meagre compared to the Fedex or other Courier people or staff.

Previously there used to be SUNDAY DELIVERY called EXPRESS DELIVERY.now it is not there...it was removed about 20 years ago i think.

the department never fills the retired vacancies...no new posts are created as the area is expanding. The poor fellow has to do all the job alone in that allotted area alone.so we are seeing some times some post men throwing all the mail in a gutter and going home.People miss very important letters .there may be employment orders or invitation to an interview.we can`t help.

the Government will never think of providing other facilities.to them

But why still they cling to that post?

Because there are benefits (some) which the Courier staff do not have.

1.Permanency of job.

2.retirement benefits...gratuity...provident fund etc.

3.Pension after retirement to him and if unfortunately he passes away family pension to his wife.

So these things are attractions (though meagre)

LET US HOPE THEY TOO WILL GET SOME BETTER SALARIES AND LEAD A HAPPY LIFE LIKE OTHERS.

GOOD QUESTION.Indians : Indian postal services - what are views? pls read details below.?
It is true that the postal delivery men/ women, the courier staff, etc suffer much for delivery of letters /parcels /etc riding on cycles in hot sun, with abig bundle of mails. More importantly, there had been two deliveries in urban area previously, the local mails delivered in the mornings and muffasil mails in the after noon, besides a post man taking Regd Post/ speed posts /MO etc sometine in between. But the postal dept had dispensed with two deliveries and restricted to one delivery man taking mails once. Due to increasing population (in a street with 20 houses or about 40 families earlier, now we have 20 flats of over 200 families now!). So the post man has to carry big bundles of mail, dropping them in the flat compounds!

Even though many people opt for electronic communications from their banks, investment sources etc, still a large number of people opt for hard copies. Also the offices do send hard copies of bulky annual reports etc. The Speed Post is still in demand in spite of the courier services in abundance. Postal services for bulk / business mails are also popular. Still the services are cheap and overheads rising for the dept, thereby making them involve in most services - the Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS), collection of telephone charges, booking Rly tickets, etc are resorted to increase receipts. But still the offices are not yet linked electronically and lot of modernisaton is possible.

The staff at office and on move deserve much better attention. You would have seen that the offices work on days declared holiday for some special reason as death of a dignatory or the onset of tsunami etc because they have to await formal communication to each office, before closing their accounts. It takes almost the evening for them even on such special holidays. The post men are also over burdened with less delivery men and larger mails to carry. Govt has to look into these things.
